Meet the All-New 2028 Mercedes-Benz GLA

July 30th, 2026 by

Mercedes-Benz has introduced the all-new 2028 Mercedes-Benz GLA, revealing a completely redesigned compact SUV with a sportier profile, a more spacious interior and a new generation of intelligent vehicle technology.

Scheduled to arrive at U.S. Mercedes-Benz locations in the second half of 2027, the new GLA will offer customers a choice between all-electric and high-tech hybrid powertrains. The expanded lineup is designed to support daily commuting, weekend travel and everyday life throughout Southern California.

Drivers in Laguna Niguel, Dana Point, San Clemente, Aliso Viejo and Ladera Ranch can continue reading for an early look at what makes the next-generation GLA distinctive.

A Sportier and More Confident Exterior

The exterior of the 2028 Mercedes-Benz GLA introduces sleeker proportions while retaining the versatile character expected from a compact SUV. Compared with its predecessor, the new GLA is 0.8 inches lower and features a wheelbase that is 2.4 inches longer.

A wider rear track, muscular shoulders and available wheels ranging from 18 to 20 inches contribute to a planted, athletic appearance. Clean body surfaces and carefully defined character lines create a modern design that changes subtly as light moves across the vehicle.

The all-electric GLA will become the first compact Mercedes-Benz model to feature the new iconic grille. Its illuminated surround, smoked-glass-effect panel and integrated Mercedes-Benz star create a distinctive visual signature. The grille incorporates 608 backlit light points, along with 158 micro-LEDs that can support available animated welcome sequences.

Hybrid GLA models will feature a star-pattern grille formed by 150 chrome stars, an illuminated LED surround and an illuminated central Mercedes-Benz star.

The AMG® Line Plus with Night Package adds high-gloss black exterior details, exclusive 20-inch AMG® wheels and a high-gloss black vehicle key. Inside, it includes sport seats, AMG® upholstery, red seatbelts, contrast stitching and illuminated door sill panels.

The Night Edition introduces MANUFAKTUR Cosmos Black Magno paint, black exterior accents and exclusive 20-inch AMG® ten-spoke aero wheels. Its interior combines AMG® Crystal White MB-Tex, black microfiber, Crystal White Pearl contrast stitching and Natural Fiber Zen trim.

Additional exterior colors will include Liquid Crystal Green and Sky Blue Metallic. New upholstery and trim selections, including Beech Brown upholstery, natural-grain wood, brushed aluminum and natural-fiber finishes, will provide further opportunities for personalization.

All-Electric GLA Powertrains

The 2028 Mercedes-Benz GLA portfolio will include two all-electric models:

  • GLA 250+ Electric: Producing 268 horsepower.
  • GLA 350 4MATIC® Electric: Producing 349 horsepower and accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in a preliminary 5.3 seconds.

Both electric models will feature an NMC battery with 85 kWh of usable capacity. Mercedes-Benz estimates up to 657 kilometers of driving range under the WLTP testing standard. Official U.S. EPA range estimates will be announced closer to the vehicle’s arrival.

An 800-volt electrical architecture will support DC fast charging at rates up to 320 kW when connected to a compatible 800-volt charging station. Under suitable conditions, Mercedes-Benz estimates that up to 270 kilometers of WLTP range can be added in approximately 10 minutes.

A standard DC converter will also allow the electric GLA to connect with compatible 400-volt charging stations, supporting greater flexibility during longer journeys.

High-Tech Hybrid Capability

Mercedes-Benz will also offer the new GLA with a high-tech hybrid powertrain in two output levels. The system combines a newly developed 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor integrated into an electrified eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The electric motor can contribute an additional 30 horsepower, while a new 48-volt lithium-ion battery provides up to 1.3 kWh of usable capacity. Under certain low-power city-driving conditions, the hybrid GLA can travel using electric propulsion alone.

The hybrid system also supports electric coasting at speeds above 60 mph and energy recuperation in all eight gears. Recuperation of up to 25 kW can help return energy to the 48-volt battery while the vehicle is slowing.

Available 4MATIC® Capability and TERRAIN Mode

Available 4MATIC® all-wheel drive will help prepare the new GLA for changing road surfaces and driving conditions. In addition to ECO, COMFORT, SPORT and INDIVIDUAL programs, 4MATIC® models will include a dedicated TERRAIN drive program.

TERRAIN mode adjusts drivetrain, steering and braking characteristics for dirt and gravel roads. An available Transparent Hood function can create a virtual view beneath the front of the vehicle, helping the driver better understand the immediate terrain when traveling beyond paved roads.

A More Spacious and Refined Interior

The completely redesigned GLA interior provides increased passenger space in both rows. The longer 109.8-inch wheelbase contributes to an additional 0.3 inches of front legroom and as much as 1.5 inches of additional rear legroom.

Maximum front and rear headroom increases by 0.9 inches. A standard fixed glass panoramic roof adds natural light and contributes to the cabin’s open atmosphere.

The panoramic roof is constructed from heat-insulating laminated safety glass with infrared-reflective and low-emissivity coatings. These materials are designed to help manage cabin temperatures during warm weather and reduce interior heat loss during cooler conditions.

An available SKY CONTROL panoramic roof can switch between transparent and opaque in approximately 10 to 20 milliseconds. Seven individually controlled segments allow occupants to customize how much sunlight enters different portions of the cabin.

A 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat provides adaptable cargo capacity and creates a nearly flat cargo floor when folded. Electric models also add a front storage compartment for smaller items.

Available MBUX Superscreen

The interior adopts a minimalist design centered around a selection of floating visual elements. The primary highlight is the available MBUX Superscreen, which extends across the dashboard beneath a single glass surface.

The MBUX Superscreen integrates three digital displays:

  • A 10.25-inch driver display.
  • A 14-inch central multimedia display.
  • A 14-inch front-passenger display.

The front-passenger display can provide access to compatible entertainment, audio and communication applications. Available content is expected to include platforms such as Disney+ and Sony RIDEVU, subject to subscriptions, connectivity and market availability.

The center console features a two-level floating design with open storage, integrated cupholders and an available wireless smartphone charging compartment.

A More Natural MBUX Virtual Assistant

The new GLA will introduce an enhanced MBUX Virtual Assistant powered by generative artificial intelligence. The system is designed to support complex, multi-part conversations while remembering short-term context.

Technology from ChatGPT, Microsoft and Google allows the assistant to access different information sources within a single conversation. The assistant appears as an animated avatar within the MBUX Zero Layer interface.

Navigation is based on Google technology and incorporates Google Cloud’s Automotive AI Agent. Drivers can ask conversational questions about routes, charging locations and points of interest while receiving information from the Google Maps platform.

For electric models, available MBUX Navigation with Electric Intelligence can plan routes that include charging stops. Route calculations can consider traffic, current energy consumption, charging availability and changes in driving style.

Advanced Driver Assistance Technology

The all-new GLA will feature a comprehensive sensor system that includes eight cameras, five radar sensors and 12 ultrasonic sensors. A water-cooled high-performance computer can process up to 254 trillion operations per second to interpret vehicle sensor data.

Digital Extra: Distance Assist DISTRONIC is expected to be included as standard. Additional assistance packages will be available, including Digital Extra: MB.DRIVE ASSIST PLUS and Digital Extra: MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST 360.

Available parking technology will include a 360-degree camera, an enhanced surround-view display and rim-protection warnings that can provide a top-view distance alert while maneuvering near curbs and other obstacles.

Driver assistance systems are designed to support an attentive driver. The driver remains responsible for safely operating the vehicle and complying with traffic conditions and regulations.

Available Burmester 3D Surround Sound

An available Burmester 3D Surround Sound System with Dolby Atmos will provide 16 speakers and an 850-watt amplifier. An enhanced sound-processing algorithm is designed to create greater depth and spatial separation throughout the cabin.

Occupants will be able to adjust the degree of three-dimensional sound, direct audio toward the first or second row and optimize the sound focus for the driver or the entire cabin. An automatic setting can detect occupied seats and adapt the sound presentation accordingly.
