Electric vehicles (EVs) have become increasingly popular in recent years due to the growing trend toward eco-friendliness. In fact, the United States has set forth a goal for EVs to make up at least half of all automobile sales by 2030.
For many, the best thing about electric cars is the prospect of saving money at the pump. However, this begs the questions, “How do electric charging stations work,” and “How much do electric car charging stations cost?”
Generally, the relationship between EV charging stations and electric cars is similar to that between your smartphone and its charger. You plug your car into an electric vehicle charging station, and it delivers electricity to your vehicle. EV owners can install home charging stations or charge their vehicles at businesses like gas stations, malls, and supermarkets.
The amount of time it takes to charge your vehicle depends on your car and the type of charging station you use. There are level 1, 2, and 3 charging stations, with level 1 stations taking up to 24 hours to deliver a full charge and level 3 stations delivering a full charge in under an hour.
Most home charging stations are Level 1 stations. They’re more cost-effective as you’ll only pay the same rate as you do for your household electronics and appliances.
Level 2 and 3 stations are what you’ll typically find at malls, gas stations, and other businesses in high-traffic areas. Level 2 stations can deliver a full charge overnight and typically cost between $15 and $25 for a full charge. Level 3 stations will charge between $30 and $45 for a full charge.
A common concern for people considering purchasing an EV is how far a full charge will take them. The typical electric vehicle can get around 250 miles out of a full charge, but some are even capable of traveling between 350 and 400 miles on a single charge.
The charging station itself can cost anywhere from $300 to $1,000 typically. With installation costs, you could end up spending between $1,000 and $8,000 on your EV charging station. However, if you charge your EV at a public charging station, expect to pay between $15 and $45 per full charge.
